How to use the 3D Coin Flip

  1. Choose your coins. Press a number key — 3 tosses three coins at once — or use the − and + buttons. Pick gold, silver or copper in Settings.
  2. Flip. Press Space, click Flip, or click a coin. It spins up into the air, falls, bounces and wobbles flat.
  3. Read the result. The side that landed face up appears in large type at the top. With several coins, each one gets a label and the two sides are counted.
  4. Watch the tally. The card on the left counts both sides, shows the percentages and the current streak. Press R to start a fresh count.

Classroom ideas

  • Probability experiment: ask the class to predict how many heads twenty flips will give. Flip, watch the percentages drift toward 50% and talk about why short runs can look lopsided.
  • Is tails “due”? When the streak reaches four or five, take a vote on the next flip. Every flip is still a fresh 50/50 — the coin has no memory.
  • Two coins, three outcomes: toss two coins thirty times and tally two heads, one of each and two tails. Why does one of each come up about twice as often?
  • Quick decisions: rename the sides Yes and No, or Team A and Team B, to settle who starts a game or which book to read next.
  • Game time: put the coin on the Classroom Board next to the dice, the spin wheel and the scoreboard.

Frequently asked questions

Is the coin flip fair?
Yes. Each coin’s side is drawn with your browser’s cryptographic random generator before the coin leaves the table, with both sides exactly equally likely. The toss is then planned to land on that side; the animation never decides the result.
Can I change “heads” and “tails”?
Yes. Type any two names in Settings, up to 14 characters each — Yes and No, Team A and Team B, Red and Blue. The new names are stamped on the coins and used in the tally.
How many coins can I flip at once?
One to five. Press 1 to 5 or use the − and + buttons. The result shows how many landed on each side.
Does the tally remember earlier flips?
Yes. The counts, percentages and last flips stay in this browser until you press R or click Clear the tally. Press T to hide the card when you only need the coin.
What if my computer cannot show 3D?
The tool switches to flat coins that still turn over in the air, with the same fair results and the same tally.
